GPA: 2007
Adelaide University Chem-e-car Event The
2007 Adelaide Heats of the national Chem-e-car competition,
sponsored by GPA, were conducted on the 30th of August.
Chem-e-Car is an annual university competition between
teams made up of third year chemical engineering students.
In the competition the teams must design a shoebox sized
car operated and stopped by a chemical reaction. Immediately
before the competition the students are told the distance
the cars must travel and the weight the car must carry.
Winners are judged on how close they get to the specified
distance.
In addition to the car students are also judged on poster
describing the car and outlining safety and environmental
aspects. GPA participated with university lecturers
in the judging of the posters.
The entries this year involved various designs one involving
an aluminium-air cell and another using a peroxide-permanganate
reaction. The final winner was an entry using the decomposition
of peroxide to produce gas which powered a piston.

UARC:
GPA Sponsored UARC team finishes 5th and National Champs
The
Adelaide Uni Formula SAE team, part sponsored by GPA,
has performed very well at the National Competition.
They finished 5th out of a field of 30. The field included
21 Australian University teams and 9 from Japan, Germany,
Denmark, Malaysia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico.
This is a brilliant result for the team.
UARC performed well in the static events with a 2nd place finish in the presentation event the highlight. This was coupled with 7th in the cost event and 11th in design which provided a good foundation before the dynamic events. UARC06 showed good speed in the dynamic events which was evident from a 4th placed finish in the Skidpad event. UARC also performed solidly in both the Autocross and Acceleration events with an 11th and 14th placed finish respectively, only several cones down or out separated us from a top 6 finish in Autocross.
The highlight for the dynamic events and for the weekend however was the Endurance event where UARC set a fast time in heat 1 which included the passing of 4 competitor’s cars in our 22km run. UARC unfortunately failed to finish the second heat of endurance on Sunday afternoon due to a fuel issue.
