NAIDOC Week 2024
GPA was pleased to spend the week engaging in Australia’s indigenous cultures and identity. In Adelaide, we welcomed Haydyn Bromley from Bookabee Australia as he spoke to staff around the country on the importance of NAIDOC week, and the ways in which we as engineers can affect positive change for indigenous people and communities in Australia.
In Perth, we were grateful to welcome Dandjoo Darbalung visit us from St Catherine’s College. Dandjoo Darbalung assists Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples attain tertiary education by providing academic, employment, and cultural support. Maxine Brahim, Director of the program, and Will, a 2nd year business student from Geraldton, presented to staff the ways which the program helps overcome the barriers to tertiary education that many first nations students face. Will and Maxine guided staff through a Boomerang painting workshop, as a keepsake and reminder of the great work that Dandjoo Darbalung is doing!
In Brisbane, Matt and Ambrose from Our Yarn/Ngalin Ayeye joined the team to share the story of Australia, flipping the perspective to tell the story from indigenous perspectives. Matt and Ambrose shared some fascinating insights into the how First Nations people lived prior to, and in the early years of, European settlement in Australia.
