Mandalay Resources Costerfield Student Tour
On the 9th of April, GPA Melbourne undergraduate engineer, Tara, got the exciting chance to attend a student tour of Mandalay Resources’ Gold and Antimony mine in Costerfield. This underground long-hole stoping mine, which processes up to 150,000 tonnes of rock a year, opened its doors to 12 mining and process engineering students eager to learn about the technical skills, geology, engineering and chemical process that go into creating concentrated gold and antimony exports.
“I got to experience so much, from workshops focusing on mining and geological theory, to demonstrations of the use of an underground drone, with a stop at the mechanic shed to see the drills in person, plus a tour of the chemically enhanced concentration process. I found the Costerfield site to be even more fascinating than I had anticipated, particularly in understanding how such a range of scientific, engineering, and skilled labour disciplines can come together to produce the final product barrels.”
“This opportunity has me excited to get stuck into more mining and metallurgy work at GPA, now that I have an on-site understanding of just what goes on that the some of the types of places we consult for. Thanks GPA and thanks Mandalay Resources!”
Site experience such as this visit equips GPA’s junior staff with the holistic, on-site understanding of the work we do and the clients we consult for!
