GPA judges ‘Speak Out for Engineering’ competition

GPA Engineering recently supported the Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) competition held on October 10, in conjunction with the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering’s Student Conference, at the University of Queensland. GPA sponsored the event and attended on the day, with Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Luke Inglis sitting on the judging panel.

SOFE is an opportunity for undergraduate mechanical engineering students, who are Affiliate, Associate or Young Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to present their thesis projects, fine-tuning their presentation skills for the chance to win the 300 pounds prize.

Luke enjoyed the day and appreciated the opportunity to take part, sharing ‘This was a great way to be involved in the engineering community and support up and coming engineers. Judging this event also provided valuable insight into current fields of research being conducted at UQ.’

A diverse range of topics were featured throughout the presentations, covering materials science to pipework and turbine design. Three students provided their findings on gas gathering wellheads researched as part of a Santos sponsored project, which was of particular interest to Luke and GPA. Another group of students studying 3D printing of titanium, presented findings on alloys and work-hardening. Luke was particularly impressed by a project on farming, for considering the applicability of the research.

The full day event wrapped up with a networking session, allowing student to connect with the judging panel and share the motivations behind their projects.
