Silo Structural Assessments for Public Artwork

GPA has developed a growing portfolio of structural assessments supporting the safe installation of silo artwork across South Australia.

We have been engaged by local councils and community organisations to assess the structural condition of silos before murals are installed. These community-led initiatives complement GPA’s long-standing work with major grain exporters and terminal operators, where our team regularly undertakes structural assessments of concrete silo infrastructure to ensure safety, durability, and operational integrity.

Our experience includes successfully completing silo assessment projects at several country storage sites and key terminal locations, including Port Adelaide, Ardrossan, Port Giles, Thevenard, and Port Pirie.

Our Approach

GPA applies a consistent and practical methodology tailored to the specific requirements of large-scale mural installations. A typical assessment includes:

  • Preparation of a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)
  • A site inspection, typically completed in one day, involving visual assessment of accessible external surfaces of the concrete silo blocks
  • Use of drone technology to inspect areas that are difficult or unsafe to reach from ground level

Inspection Report

Following the inspection, GPA prepares a concise and comprehensive report that typically includes:

  • A summary of the current condition of all concrete silo cells
  • An evaluation of the structure’s suitability to safely receive mural artwork
  • Repair recommendations, where required, to support mural installation
  • Inspection record sheets for each silo cell
  • A condition register developed using an asset risk framework
  • Photographic records of all silos and inspected areas

Supporting Safe and Successful Artwork Projects

This structured approach ensures that any structural risks, deterioration, or damage that could affect artwork installation are identified early and addressed before painting begins.

GPA’s clear and detailed documentation provides councils, community organisations, and artists with confidence that the silos are safe and suitable for transformation. This enables the successful delivery of high-quality public art that enhances regional communities.

With a combination of technical expertise, consistent methodology, and a strong record of successful project delivery, GPA has demonstrated proven capability in supporting silo artwork initiatives and helping create iconic landmarks across South Australia.

GPA’s structural inspection and assessment services ensure concrete silos are safe, suitable, and fully compliant for the installation of large‑scale mural artwork.
