Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System
Mortlake BESS is a 300 MW / 650 MWh grid-connected battery storage facility located on vacant land adjacent to the existing Mortlake Power Station. The brownfield development aims to enhance renewable energy capacity and storage solutions and is part of Origin’s strategy to accelerate growth in renewable energy to support the transition to a net-zero future.
GPA supported Origin Energy as Owner’s Engineer, providing a range of multidisciplinary services to assist with the delivery of the project, including project management, design reviews, interface management and independent assurance.
GPA’s tasks included:
- Project management activities, such as maintaining comprehensive records of the project, review processes, compliance checks etc and providing regular reports to stakeholders detailing project progress, risks, and compliance status.
- Owner’s Engineering activities for Electrical, Civil, SCADA and Instrumentation/Control disciplines, including attendance at design review meetings, facilitating and attending risk management and HAZOP workshops, and active coordination between various contractors and stakeholders.
- Detailed Design activities for Site Early Works (Electrical, Mechanical and Civil) for Construction preparation, including site inspections for compliance, and Concept Switchyard Design for initiating the BESS utility connection scope.
- Review of project deliverables and Contractor submissions to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and legislative & regulatory requirements, in addition to coordinating the design review process via Origin’s preferred document management software.
- Monitoring, identification and advisory on potential non-conformances, non-compliances, and risks, suggesting mitigation strategies.
- Reviews during construction and commissioning phases to ensure adherence to quality standards.
- Interface management support between Origin, the TNSP and EPC Contractor for the Utility Connection design.
