HyP SA Hydrogen Production and Injection Facility
The facility owned and operated by Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG), supplies high purity hydrogen to the existing natural gas distribution network and includes infrastructure for tube trailer filling applications. The project involved a number of key stakeholders, from government to the domestic gas consumer.
Working closely with an international electrolyser manufacturer, GPA was able to navigate the complex Australian compliance and certification process for the project.
The facility will produce hydrogen using a 1.25 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser, one of the first installed in the country. To support the hydrogen production the facility includes high-pressure hydrogen storage and equipment for blending hydrogen with natural gas.
This blending equipment enables the injection of hydrogen into the local Tonsley gas distribution network. Finally, the facility includes a hydrogen compressor and tube trailer-filling forecourt, used to fill high-pressure hydrogen cylinders for a variety of applications.
The project will link the gas network with the electrical market and provide residents of the Tonsley district with a lower carbon natural gas.
GPA’s project involvement included:
- Complete detailed design of the facility
- Mechanical & piping design
- Process
- Civil & structural
- Electrical & instrumentation
- Site control systems
- Equipment specification and selection
- Procurement, construction and commissioning support
- Technical and regulatory advice injection
