Port Bonython Hydrogen Ecosystem

GPA was engaged by Santos to provide pre-FEED and FEED engineering services for the proposed Port Bonython Hydrogen Ecosystem, located adjacent the existing Santos Port Bonython Liquids Plant. The pre-FEED considered the technical feasibility of hydrogen production equipment (nominally 5 MW or 2 tonne per day equivalent electrolysis), compression and storage, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle refuelling, process heat applications within the adjacent plant and export and on-sale to other hydrogen users.

GPA successfully delivered pre-FEED and concept level design to determine technical feasibility of the options under consideration and refine the scope of FEED design. GPA subsequently delivered FEED design for a phased project scope with Phase 1 corresponding to hydrogen production, storage and export (via tube trailers) located at Port Bonython to an offsite fuel cell vehicle refuelling facility, and Phase 2 corresponding to expansion of the facilities at Port Bonython to include fuel cell vehicle refuelling of prime movers used to transport LPG.

The FEED scope included design of plant interfaces (water, waste water, power), consideration of interactions with the existing Major Hazard Facility, detailed drawings (process, mechanical, civil, electrical), basis of design, Safety in Design activities such as HAZOP and preliminary bowties and a cost estimate. The FEED deliverables were successfully delivered within budget and the required schedule. The FEED design and cost estimate were used by Santos to inform FID considerations.

The project comprised:

  • Connection of plant interfaces, including liaison with the relevant utility providers, including water, waste water and electricity
  • Installation of 2 x 2.5 MW grid connected PEM electrolyser packages
  • Installation of compression, onsite storage and tube trailer filling equipment at Port Bonython
  • Installation of refuelling equipment at an offsite location
  • Associated civil works including interaction with existing LPG truck loadout
  • Associated control system design including integration with plant control system
  • Project completed, including Safety in Design reviews, within the context of existing Major Hazard Facility
