Regulatory Mapping of Future Fuels

GPA in conjunction with RMIT University, were commissioned by the Future Fuels CRC to deliver a report identifying the Australian legislation (including Acts, regulations, statutory policy and referenced standards) that may restrict or prevent the introduction of future fuels such as hydrogen or biogas into existing natural gas infrastructure.

The report provides a summary of key regulation across three areas including safety and technical regulation, economic regulation, and environment and land use planning regulation covering the traditional natural gas supply chain from production to transmission, distribution and end use. Detailed results of the analysis were documented in a spreadsheet accompanying the study report.

GPA reviewed the safety and technical regulation covering the complete supply chain in each state and territory, reviewing the legislation and its application to the introduction of 10%, 50% or 100% hydrogen, as well as 100% biogas (meeting existing quality specifications). GPA also reviewed the Australian standards described as mandatory in the associated legislation, with findings and recommendations delivered in the joint report.
